Firstly Western Sahara is not an independent sovereign state in its own right, it is a disputed territory between Spain and Morocco. It is an ex-Spainish colony and is on the UN list of non self governing territories and has been controlled by Morrocco since 1991. Geographically it is one of the most sparsely populated terrirtoies in the world, mainly consisting of dry desert flatlands. For a territory of 266,000 km square it has a very small population in comparison, 500,000 of which over half life in the main city, El Aaiún.
